Taking its cue from the French ‘Duchesse brisée’, a lounging chair quite perfect for mid-afternoon naps, the Duchess Chair is based on an early English adaptation dating from circa 1745. A generous, low-slung armchair, its wings served the dual purpose of protecting the dweller from drafts and providing a headrest should they happen to nod off.

While perfectly comfortable in its own right, the Duchess Chair can be paired – as per tradition – with a matching footstool to allow for full extension.

Fabric Requirements

Duchess chair requires:

  • 4.5 metres of fabric (plain and standard width)
  • 4.5 metres of flat braid
  • 1.5 metres of fabric for the piping OR 5 metres flanged cord for the top and bottom edges of the seat cushion
  • 16 tufts if using instead of buttons (matching buttons will otherwise be made from supplied fabric)

Duchess chair and footstool set requires:

  • 8 metres of fabric (plain and standard width)
  • 8 metres of flat braid
  • 2.5 metres of fabric for the piping OR 13 metres flanged cord for the top and bottom edges of the seat and footstool cushions
  • 30 tufts if using instead of buttons (matching buttons will otherwise be made from supplied fabric)
