Max Rollitt

Hampshire Coastal Villa

UK

A long-standing client came to Max after purchasing this exceptional house in the coastal village she visited as a child. Built in the 1840s by a floor cloth manufacturer, it changed ownership in the early 1900s and an extension was added shortly afterwards. The property is flanked by a walled garden with greenhouses and extensive grounds overlooking the shore.

Needing a complete redesign, Max and the team collaborated closely with the client, drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement to give the house a sense of character, charm and comfort.

“In their poetic composition and palette, Rollitt’s rooms are nothing short of painterly—they have the moody interiority of Caspar David Friedrich or Vilhelm Hammershoi—and into these auratic environments are placed the client’s superb collections.”

– Alisa Carroll, Veranda

“We initially painted this room a soft, off-white but, the light in this house was such that it was just too bright. With Edward Bulmer’s Etruscan Brown, however, we were able to achieve a gentle warmth that provided the perfect base upon which to build layers of comfort.”
