Max Rollitt

Hampshire Garden Cottage

UK

What was once an unloved gardeners’ cottage on a larger coastal estate is now a colourful retreat for the owners’ friends and family.

Intimately familiar with Max’s work – having enlisted him to restore and reimagine their own home, as well as buying Max Rollitt antiques for many decades – they allowed our team the space to experiment and play, resulting in an interior that’s full of character and joy. Thoughtful details nod to the house’s history, from period features to the pitch pine bed Max originally made for the client back in 1999.

Taking cues from the wildflower garden just outside, we brought in botanical prints and a relaxed, natural rhythm. Floral patterns bloom across wallpapers and fabrics, and cherished pieces from the client’s own collection sit alongside Max Rollitt Bespoke furniture and antiques, creating a beautifully layered interior that feels like it’s grown into itself over time.

“The two-bedroom house has the easy, unstudied air of one that has been lived in and added to over time, rather than lain derelict for decades and brought back to life with a lurch.”

— Malaika Byng, House & Garden

“This layering is a mainstay for Max, who has honed the art of creating the ‘untouched’ interior – a sensitive, lived-in and seemingly uncontrived look that feels as if a decorator never set foot in the house.”
