Originally one of seven panels illustrating 'The Story of Hero and Leander', this late-seventeenth century English tapestry depicts the young Leander swimming the Hellespont to meet Hero upon the shore. Flanked with floral borders, the top with floral garlanded swag decoration.

Francis Cleyn (1582-1658) first supplied the designs for 'The Story of Hero and Leander' to the Mortlake manufactory in the late 1630s. They were used there throughout the seventeenth century and then later reproduced by private workshops in Soho and Lambeth.
