Bermudan Cedar Bureau Bookcase, circa 1750

A mid-eighteenth century Bermudan cedar bureau bookcase, with a carved swan-neck pediment above a pair of moulded doors and candle slides. The hinged fall over two short and three long drawers, on plain bracket feet.

Bermudan Cedar (Juniperus Bermudiana) was used extensively in Bermudan furniture-making throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Prized for its fine, honey red tone and long-lasting sweet aroma, Bermudan cedar can withstand hurricanes, salt spray, mildew, moth and termite.

An island with only a small population, these early pieces were often crafted by shipwrights, masons and seamen, as well as skilled cabinetmakers, in styles influenced by English, Spanish and American craftsmen.
