A large 19th-century act of parliament or tavern wall clock, the oak case with mahogany banding and a painted dial with Roman numerals.
In 1797 a five shilling tax was imposed on clocks in Britain, resulting in a reliance on prominently displayed clocks in public places, such as taverns.
