Large 19th-Century French ‘Carton de Tapisserie’ or Tapestry Cartoon

An impressive full-scale tapestry cartoon, probably from Aubusson, central France. The unstretched canvas painted with birds and trees before a mountainous lakeside landscape, set within a decorative floral border.

These working preparatory paintings were used by weavers as accurate templates for both colour and design placement, and were typically positioned behind or beneath the loom's warp threads.
