A Chippendale period mahogany cabinet on stand of excellent quality. The breakfront upper with three original latticed lacquered-brass wirework doors, on a serpentine breakfront base with cross banded re-entrant cornered top. The drawers with ormolu handles and leather writing slide over a crisply carved, gadrooned moulding, standing on square tapering legs with blind fretwork floral panels, on spade feet.
Probably by Wright and Elwick of Wakefield, Yorkshire's pre-eminent firm of cabinet makers in the 18th century, this cabinet draws on the designs in the first Chippendale Director, 'The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director', 1754. The distinctive handles and carved embellishments are both characteristic of Wright and Elwick's designs.
