Two similar eighteenth-century Chinese bowls.
One riveted in antiquity and all the more charming for it.
Such shallow bowls are listed in Dutch inventories as 'klapmuts', because when held upside-down their shape resembles that of a type of hat with an upturned brim
Similar smaller bowls of this shape were recovered from the wreck of the Witte Leeuw, a Dutch East Indiaman which sank in 1613.
