Bamboo Ottoman

A quirky, whimsical hand decorated simulated bamboo ottoman, celebrating the Regency fascination for all things Far Eastern.

“During the mid to late 18th century, European design was heavily influenced by the plethora of objects arriving via now well-established East to West trade routes” says Max. “By the early 19th Century, many exported goods were designed specifically to cater for these new markets: a cacophony of design, reinvented and reimagined to sell the exotic and fantastical to European customers.”

The stool’s solid beech legs are hand turned in our Sussex workshop to match an antique 19th century simulated bamboo original, then incorporated into a traditionally constructed solid beech frame. The legs and stretchers are gessoed and hand painted in ochre with traditional paints and waxes to ensure the Bamboo Stool ages just as gracefully as its predecessors. Upholstery is completed by our skilled in-house team here at Yavington, using traditional techniques and natural fibre fillings. The process, whilst labour intensive, guarantees years of use: the decoration guarantees years of joy.
